Target Bird species

  • Great Green Macaw: Selva Verde Lodge and surroundings are one of the last places in Costa Rica where the endangered Great Green Macaw can still be seen. Their noisy calls make their presence conspicuous.
  • White-collared Manakin: this attractive colorful little bird is common in the more dense parts of the rainforest, where courting males form leks jumping between small twigs and snapping their wings.
  • Snowy Cotinga: the rare Snowy Cotinga is a large pigeon-size bird; males are snowwhite, females light gray. They tend to perch high in the treetops and therefore are not very easy to see.
  • Sunbittern: the Sunbittern is a unique bird: it is the only member in its own genus and family ! It is not a heron, nor an ibis nor a rail. It’s a Sunbittern. The Sunbittern gets its name from the sun-like dots that can be seen in the wings when in flight.
