The itinerary below illustrates a typical nature photography journey through Costa Rica. Carefully selected lodges, expert local guides, and a variety of habitats provide outstanding opportunities to photograph birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and breathtaking landscapes.

Explore one of Costa Rica’s most rewarding lowland rainforest regions, offering exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography. Professionally designed bird feeders attract an incredible variety of tropical species, including toucans, colorful tanagers, and oropendolas, with carefully prepared natural perches and smooth backgrounds creating ideal photographic conditions.
A dedicated macro photography session introduces you to the fascinating world of rainforest frogs and snakes, while a visit to the King Vulture hide offers a rare opportunity to photograph one of the Neotropics’ most spectacular birds at close range.

Photograph tropical wildlife beneath the iconic landscapes of Arenal Volcano
Discover the rich biodiversity of the Arenal region, where lush rainforest and volcanic landscapes create outstanding wildlife photography opportunities. At the lodge, highly active feeders attract spectacular species such as Great Curassow, Emerald Tanager, and Golden-hooded Tanager at close range. Wildlife encounters may also include White-nosed Coati and Central American Spider Monkeys moving through the surrounding forest.
A guided visit to Danaus Ecocenter offers additional photographic highlights, including a breeding colony of Boat-billed Herons, with further opportunities for Green Basilisk and Sloth encounters in a natural rainforest setting.

Tropical dry forest bird photography & Tarcoles River boat tours
The Carara & Tárcoles region offers an exceptional combination of wetlands, river habitats and tropical dry forest photography opportunities. During two private boat excursions on the Tárcoles River, we explore mangroves, riverbanks and coastal habitats with excellent chances to photograph a great diversity of birdlife including kingfishers, herons, Brown Pelicans, Magnificent Frigatebirds, Roseate Spoonbills and Scarlet Macaws, as well as the region’s famous American Crocodiles.
The program also includes a private bird photography excursion in the Orotina area together with a skilled local bird photographer, focusing on characteristic tropical dry forest species such as Turquoise-browed Motmot and Black-headed Trogon, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl and Pacific Screech Owl.

The Talamanca Highlands offer some of Costa Rica’s most spectacular mountain bird photography opportunities, combining exceptional birdlife with dramatic cloudforest scenery. Mist-covered mountains, moss-laden forests and ever-changing light conditions create a stunning backdrop for photography throughout the region.
During our stay, you will enjoy a private guided photography excursion focused on the iconic Resplendent Quetzal as well as a variety of beautiful highland specialties such as Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher and Golden-browed Chlorophonia.
The itinerary also includes access to hummingbird feeders with close photographic encounters . In addition, a specialized multi-flash photography session provides unique opportunities to capture hummingbirds in flight .

Return to San José & transfer to the international airport
After exploring Costa Rica’s diverse ecosystems, the journey concludes back in San José with a relaxing stay at a comfortable hotel surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens. The property offers excellent final photography opportunities, including close encounters with the elegant Lesson’s Motmot, which is often seen perched quietly within the gardens.
This final overnight stay provides time to unwind, organize photographs and reflect on the many wildlife experiences encountered throughout the tour before the scheduled airport transfer on the following day.
