Your birding adventure begins at Centro Manu, a hidden gem located at the edge of Braulio Carrillo National Park. Here, you’ll stay in simple but comfortable cabins with private bathrooms, surrounded by excellent birding habitat in one of Costa Rica’s most productive middle-elevation regions.
A private half-day birding tour with local expert Kenneth introduces you to the area’s rich birdlife. Specialties include Bare-necked Umbrellabird, Yellow-eared Toucanet, White-ruffed Manakin, and Black-crested Coquette, while a Great Potoo is often found roosting near the parking area. The surrounding forests also offer excellent opportunities for tanagers, hummingbirds, toucans, and many other Caribbean-slope species.
Birding Highlights:
Surrounded by lush middle-elevation rainforest, Celeste Mountain Lodge provides an excellent base for exploring one of Costa Rica’s most bird-rich regions. Local specialties include Tody Motmot, Keel-billed Motmot, Spotted Antbird, and Ocellated Antbird.
A private half-day birding tour at Tapir Valley combines rainforest trails and feeders, offering opportunities for Snowcap, Rufous-winged Tanager, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, and Keel-billed Toucan. The reserve is also one of the best places to search for the endangered Baird’s Tapir.
Birding Highlights
Overlooking the Gulf of Nicoya, Tarcoles Birding Lodge offers spectacular views and excellent birding right from the property, with Scarlet Macaws frequently seen flying past at eye level. Its convenient location makes it an ideal base for exploring the bird-rich habitats of the Central Pacific region.
Included is a private half-day birding tour in Carara National Park, home to specialties such as Streak-chested Antpitta, Red-capped Manakin, and Velvety Manakin. You’ll also enjoy a private boat tour on the Tárcoles River, a productive excursion for aquatic birds and mangrove specialists, including opportunities to search for the endemic Mangrove Hummingbird.
Birding Highlights:
Far from Costa Rica’s main tourist destinations, Quizarrá is a small rural community surrounded by forests, pasturelands, and productive birding habitat. You’ll stay in a simple local lodge and experience an authentic side of Costa Rica while exploring one of the country’s most underrated birding regions.
A private half-day birding tour explores the surrounding area in search of specialties such as Turquoise Cotinga, White-crested Coquette, Golden-naped Woodpecker, and Spot-crowned Euphonia. You’ll also visit the Aracari Birding Deck, where colorful honeycreepers, tanagers, and other birds can be observed at close range.
Birding Highlights:
Perched at 2,700 meters above sea level, Quetzal Paradise Lodge enjoys spectacular views of the cloudforest-covered Talamanca Mountains. The lodge’s feeders and trails provide excellent opportunities to observe the endemic-rich birdlife that makes Costa Rica’s highlands one of the country’s premier birding destinations.
Included is a private half-day birding tour in search of the magnificent Resplendent Quetzal. Local guides closely monitor the birds, maximizing your chances for excellent views while allowing more time to explore the area’s many other specialties, including Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher, Fiery-throated Hummingbird, Golden-browed Chlorophonia, and Spangle-cheeked Tanager
Birding Highlights:
Surrounded by coffee plantations and overlooking Lake Cachí, La Casona del Cafetal offers a peaceful setting and excellent opportunities to experience rural Costa Rica. The surrounding coffee farms support a variety of birds, including the endemic Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow, White-crowned Parrot, and Barred Antshrike.
A highlight of your stay is a private half-day birding tour at El Copal, an isolated reserve bordering Tapantí National Park. This productive foothill site is one of Costa Rica’s most reliable locations for the dazzling Snowcap, while other specialties include Emerald Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager, Scarlet-thighed Dacnis, and many other Caribbean-slope birds.
Birding Highlights:
