Hotel Villa Lapas

Introduction

Hotel Villa Lapas combines the comfort of a modern hotel with a spectacular natural experience at the edge of Parque Nacional Carara, one of the best areas for birdwatching in Costa Rica. Hotel Villa Lapas is conveniently located at only a short 1-hour drive from San José connected by modern paved highways in the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Excellent birding habitat with mangroves and the primary forest of Parque Nacional Carara lies withing 5 km diameter.

Facilities

Hotel Villa Lapas offers 76 rooms beautifully located in the middle of tropical gardens and the edge of the rainforest. All rooms have a safe, cable television air-conditioning and private bathroom with hot water. A pleasant open air dining room surrounded by tropical gardens and the nearby Tarcolitos river offers good food. Besides that there is a well stocked bar near the swimming pool. The large tropical garden is full of birds and in the dry season some of their forest trails are accessible.

Birding and wildlife attractions

409 species of birds have been registered on the Hotel Villa Lapas grounds according to E-bird.

The gardens of Hotel Villa Lapas can be very productive for a morning or afternoon birdwalk and in the dry season (more or less from December until May) a small trail leads from the hotel into an adjacent piece of virgin rainforest where additional more forest related species can be expected. Often Lineated Woodpecker, Slaty-tailed Trogon, Gartered Trogon and Black-headed Trogon can be seen in the gardens. While the beautiful Black-throated Trogon and Pale-billed and Golden-naped Woodpecker are often seen along the rainforest trails.

Target bird species

Scarlet Macaw: this large bright red parrot species is THE iconic bird of the area and is relatively common in the area.
Long-tailed Manakin: a precious bird that is often around in the rainforest behind the hotel. They are heard often but seeing them is challenging.
Painted Bunting: this is a very colorful migratory bird that can be seen in Costa Rica between October and April. They can sometimes be seen foraging in the lawn of the garden of Hotel Villa Lapas.
Royal Flycatcher: this flycatcher species is famous for its spectacular crest and often hangs out on the grounds of Hotel Villa Lapas, often near the small river running through the property.
