Andrés Chinchilla is a passionate birder and a true expert in bird sounds. He not only recognizes an impressive range of calls but can also imitate them with remarkable skill. Known for his great sense of humor and warm, helpful nature, Andrés is a favorite among travelers. With many years of experience guiding both birding and bird photography groups, he brings knowledge, enthusiasm, and a personal touch to every tour.
You’ll be greeted by your tour guide, Andrés Chinchilla, who will give you an introduction to the adventure ahead. We’ll then enjoy a welcome dinner together at the beautiful Hotel Buena Vista, surrounded by coffee plantations and tropical gardens—the perfect setting to start our birding journey.
On our way to Katira, the base for our Agami Heron expedition, we’ll stop at San Ramón to enjoy some birding at active feeders, hoping to spot stunning species such as the Coppery-headed Emerald, Violet Sabrewing, Green Hermit, and Blue-and-gold Tanager.
Today we’ll spend the entire day on Agami Island, making the most of our time with the breeding colony. We’ll have ample opportunity to observe and photograph Agami Herons in their spectacular breeding plumage, while also keeping an eye out for Kingfishers and a variety of other heron species
Our journey continues to the biodiverse region of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. In the afternoon, we’ll explore the edges of the La Selva Biological Station, an excellent spot to search for the endangered Great Green Macaw, Bat Falcon, White-throated Crake, and many other fascinating species
At La Selva, we’ll be surrounded by a overwhelming array of colorful birds, with excellent chances to spot White-collared Manakin, Snowy Cotinga, Pale-billed Woodpecker, and many more. Wildlife enthusiasts can also expect to see sloths, up to three species of monkeys, Green Iguanas, and much more...
A visit to Cope is always a unique experience with great photography oportunities for hummingbirds like Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer and White-necked Jacobin and arainforest walk to look for some day roosts of nocturnal birds with possible Spectacled Owl, Crested Owl and Great Potoo.
After some bird photography around the hotel, we’ll make our way back to San José, where we end in the nice Hotel Bougainvillea with access to a large botanical garden full of birds where we can look for Lesson's Motmot, White-eared Ground-sparrow and Crimson-fronted Parakeet
