Mawamba Lodge

Introduction

Mawamba Lodge is the perfect base for exploring the rich biodiversity of the area in and around Parque Nacional Tortuguero. Mawamba Lodge allows you to experience the rainforest from the comfort of a nice lodge where besides nature exploring there will be plenty of time for relaxing and enjoying the nearby beach. Mawamba Lodge is located about 1 km north of th village of Tortuguero and right at the edge of the Parque Nacional Tortuguero in the northeastern part of Costa Rica. The only way to get to Tortuguero is by boat or by plane. The typical route to Tortuguero is by car or bus from San José ascending the modern highway nr 32 all the way to Siquirres, followed by about 25 km unpaved roads through pasturelands and banana plantations until getting to the La Pavona dock, from where the boat is taken for the last hour to 1,5 hours to Tortuguero.

Facilities

Mawamba Lodge offers 50 standard rooms and 4 more spacious superior rooms pleasantly decorated and integrated in the tropical gardens. All rooms have their private bathroom with hot water, ceiling fan and a small porch with relaxing chairs. There is a refreshing swimming pool, a good restaurant and a bar next to it. The large property is limited by the Tortuguero canal on one side and the beach and the Caribbean Sea on the other.

Birding and wildlife attractions

According to Ebird 306 species of birds have been recorded from the Mawamba Lodge hotel grounds. The nearby Parque Nacional Tortuguero has 438 species registered. Besides birds Mawamba Lodge and the adjecent Parque Nacional Tortuguero are a great place to watch up to 3 species of monkeys (Mantled Howler Monkey, White-throated Capuchin Monkey and Central American Spider Monkey), 2 species of sloths (Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth and Hoffman’s Two-toed Sloth), Spectacled Caiman, Green Iguabas, Green Basilisks and much more…

Target Birds

  • Great Green Macaw: Great Green Macaw is endangered but has been doing very well in the last years and have become relatively easy to see in the Tortuguero area…obvious their striking colors, their size and the loud calls they produce helps to spot them.
  • Sungrebe: this is a secretive bird, preferring well-covered slow-flowing streams and secluded waterways, sometimes swimming partly submerged, like an Anhinga. Sungrebes are unique among birds in that males have “pouches”, folds of skin under their wings in which they carry their young from hatching until the chicks are able to swim for themselves
  • Green-and-rufous Kingfisher: this is the hardest species of all 6 species of neotropical kingfishers. They are uncommon and prefer the quieter parts of rivers in Caribbean lowlands in dense lowland forest.
