Las Caletas Lodge

Introduction

In Caletas Lodge one can experience the untouched nature in a small eco-friendly hotel in the Southern Pacific of Costa Rica on the very remote Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park, one of the most isolated and biologically intense places in Central America. Caletas Lodge is on the Osa Peninsula between the small community of Darke Bay (Bahía Drake) and the Corcovado National Park. It can only be reached by boat ride first through Costa Rica’s largest mangrove forest and afterwards along the beautiful virgin coastline of the Osa Peninsula. Caletas Lodge is the perfect base to explore the spectacular Parque Nacional Corcovado and for a Caño Island snorkeling or diving tour

Facilities

Caletas Lodge offers 2 DUPLEX ROOMS with ocean view, ideal for families or small groups of friends. The HONEYMOON SUITE is a two-story bungalow that is more secluded and has nice forest, garden and ocean views. The 2 STANDARD ROOMS are smaller and have forest views. There are also 3 PRIVATE TENTS: these tents are quite spacious and are set on an elevated platform and have a front porch with a couple of armchairs. All rooms come with fans. All rooms but the tents have private attached bathrooms. The tents have also private bathroom but not attached.

Caletas Lodge has an open air dining room with spectacular rainforest and ocean view where delicious healthy gourmet meals are offered, and natural drinks, soft drinks and local beers and wine can be consumed.

Birding and wildlife attractions

According to E-bird 233 species of birds have been recorded in Caletas Lodge. The nearby Corcovado National Park has a register of almost 400 birdspecies. The typical avifauna of Southern Costa Rica can be expected here with Golden-naped Woodpecker, Spot-crowned Euphonia, Black-hooded Antshrike, Riverside Wrens and Fiery-billed Aracari. However Caletas Lodge and Parque Nacional Corcovado is mostly famous for its rich and intact ecosystem with a unique biodiversity hard to find anywhere else on earth. Nowhere else in the country all 4 Costa Rica monkey species can be seen, Baird’s Tapirs are regularly seen and even a Puma or Jaguar is not impossible here

Target bird and mammal species

  • Black-cheeked Ant-tanager: this is a bird with a very small distribution range limited to the Osa Peninsula and Golfe Dulce area. It is not an easy bird to see but could be around on any small patch of forest near Caletas Lodge, often following mixed species flocks.
  • Baird’s Tapir: the nearby Parque Nacional Corcovado is the best place in Costa Rica to spot the endangered Baird’s Tapir, Costa Rica’s largest land mammal.
  • Central American Squirrel Monkey:  Parque Nacional Corcovado is the only national park in Costa Rica where all 4 monkey species can be seen. The Central American Squirrel Monkeys are the smallest  of all and move in large groups of about 30 – 40 individuals through the rainforest
  • A cat: seeing one of the 6 cat species is very difficult in Costa Rica…and even in Parque Nacional Corcovado, even though the vast rainforest reserve is known to have the healthiest wild cat populations of the country.
