La Ensenada Lodge

Introduction

La Ensenada Lodge offers access to world class birding habitat and is the best place to look for the typical birds of the tropical dry forest in Costa Rica. Besides that the proximity of mangroves and the Pacific Coast, and the surrounding pasture lands, lagoons and savannas makes Ensenada Lodge a great place to include in your Costa Rica birding itinerary. La Ensenada Lodge is located in the small village of Abangaritos in the northwestern part of Costa Rica. It isabout 3 hour driving from San José with the last 20 kms along unpaved road.

Facilities

La Ensenada Lodge offers 25 basic cabins that are clean and hive private bathroom. All rooms have a small private porch overlooking the beautiful surroundings and the Pacific Ocean. There is a swimming pool and rustic restaurant and bar offering good simple typical Costa Rican dishes. La Ensenada Lodge is part of a 350 ha dedicated to cattle, horses, and also production of salt. Since 1977 it was declared a National Wildlife Refuge and many of the original tropical dry forest and mangroves haven been restored and preserved. Hotel guests can enjoy an extensive network of trails giving access to a wide variety of great birding habitat.

Birding and wildlife attractions

367 species of birds have been registered in La Ensenada Lodge. The wide variety of easy accessible habitat types make La Ensenada Lodge a great birding lodge in Costa Rica. Patches of tropical dry forest attract the typical avifauna with species like Long-tailed Manakin, Black-headed Trogon, Turquoise-browed Motmot,  Rufous-naped Wren and Cinnamon Hummingbird; the nearby shoreline of the Pacific Ocean attract seabirds like Brown Pelicans, Magnificent Frigatebird, Laughing Gulls and Royal Terns; while the nearby salt ponds fill up with shorebirds like Sandpipers, Willets, Whimbrells,…

Target birds

 

  • Turqoise-browed Motmot: this is a very colourful bird relatively common near La Ensenada Lodge.
  • Long-tailed Manakin: this beauiful Manakin is not easy to see and to approach. They often hang out in the larger patches of tropical dry forest or in gallery forest (forest bordering a river) .
  • Thicket Tinamou: another very hard bird that sometimes can be seen and heard in the densly forested areas of La Ensenada Lodge
