Introduction

Hotel Bougainvillea is the perfect place to start or end a Costa Rica birding tour. It is conveniently located at only 15 to 30 minutes from the airport, in a quiet residential neighborhood surrounded by a large garden full of beautiful flowers, birds and butterflies. Facilities

All rooms are modern and are elegantly furnished. Room amenities include flatscreen Cable TV, air conditioning, ceiling fan, safety deposit box and a sitting area on a private terrace with either garden views or panoramic views of the Central Valley. All bathrooms have been recently renovated, have stylish sinks and showers and include a hairdryer. The hotel is situated in a 4 hectares well maintained garden, exclusively accessible by hotel guests. There is a swimming pool, souvenir shop and even a tennis court. The restaurant serves delicious Costarican and international dishes and there is a well-stocked bar. Free Wireless internet is available in the rooms and in the common areas.

Birding and wildlife attractions

Besides being the ideal place to relax after or before a long international flight, Hotel Bougainvillea is one of best birding spot in the whole San José metropolitan area. The beautiful gardens dotted with tropical plants like heliconia’s, gingers, bromelia´s and even orchids attract many butterflies and some of the more common birds of Costa Rica. A morning birdwalk here is the ideal introduction to birdwatching in Costa Rica.

Target birdspecies

Some of Hotel Bougainvillea’s interesting species include:

  • Lesson’s Motmot: common in the Hotel Bougainvillea’s garden and often also easy to approach and photograph.
  • Rufous-capped Warbler: a bit harder to see since it likes to hang out in the dense vegetation of the garden and move around fast.
  • White-eared Ground-Sparrow: this handsome bird is often overseen on a Costa Rica birding tour. They sometimes hop around on the lawn but can also be hidden in the dense vegetation.
  • Mottled Owl: This owl is often well hidden in the large bamboothicket close to the swimming pool…the garden staff often know their perch.
