Hacienda Barú

Introduction

Hacienda Barú is a pleasant ecolodge on Costa Rica’s South Pacific Coast, where rainforest-covered mountains rise up from the dramatic coastline. An incredible variety of habitats makes this an ideal place for birdwatching in Costa Rica with access to an extensive network of rainforest trails with great birding and wildlife watching. Hacienda Barú is located about 2 kms west of the coastal town of Dominical in Southern Costa Rica. It is connected with good paved roads all the way to San José, a beautiful journey of about 200 kms (about 4 hours by car) that will take you through some dramatic mountain scenery.

Facilities

Hacienda Barú is a small ecolodge offering 12 clean but basic rooms. 6 units are separately spaced bungalows, with a private bathroom, small kitchen with basic cooking and eating utensils and a fridge, small living room and porch. 4 of the bungalows have 3 bedrooms, ideal for families and 2 bungalows have 2 bedrooms. Besides that Hacienda Barú offers 6 superior rooms with private bathrooms in front of their nice swimming pool. All units are located in nicely groomed tropical gardens and at the edge of Hacienda Barú’s own private rainforest reserve and at 500 meters from the beach. There is a reception and small souvenir shop, simple restaurant and bar serving good local and international food and drinks.

Birding and wildlife attractions

According to Ebird 435 species of birds  have been recorded in Hacienda Barú. The proximity of the Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge that protects 330 ha of primary and secondary rainforest is a real boost for the biodiversity here and a very important habitat for some endangered species. The access to a wide variety of (birding) habitat with rainforest,  shoreline, pasturelands and rivers makes the area of Hacienda Barú and surroundings a great birding spot. Hacienda Barú is the ideal place to explore some of the typical rainforest birds of the South Pacific, where several unique bird species can be seen like Black-hooded antshrike, Spot-crowned Euphonia, Riveride Wren. But also up to 3 species of monkeys, 2 species of Sloths, Green Iguanas and much more can be seen in Haciedna Barú

Target bird species

  • Fiery-billed Aracari: a very handsome small toucan that is limited to Southern Costa Rica and Western Panama. They tend to show up now and then in small family groups in the reception area and forest edge of Hacienda Barú.
  • Golden-naped Woodpecker: a colorful woodpecker endemic to Costa Rica and West-Panama. Look for them in dead trunks at the forest edge.
  • Orange-collared Manakin: males have a bright orange breast and perform their typical wing-snapping dances in leks. Also limited to Costa Rica and Western- Panama…
  • Common Potoo: not easily seen anywhere, but Hacienda Barú is a good place for this very bizar bird. They can be often heard vocalizing their typical 3-note call at night even from your room, so they are often nearby. However their perfect camouflage makes this bird very hard to see.
