Esquinas Rainforest Lodge

Introduction

Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is a small and exclusive ecolodge located in one of best places for birdwatching in Costa Rica in the extreme south of the country. Here you will be immersed in a tranquil rainforest environment surrounded by several acres of untouched tropical rainforest. You will be able to have a fantastic natural experience but also will have the chance to get to know a very authentic rural area far away from mass tourism. Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is located at the edge of Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas in the Golfo Dulce area and near the Osa Peninsula, famous for its unique and endemic richt fauna and flora. 

Facilities

Esquinas Rainforest Lodge  offers 18 specious rooms all equipped with a private bathroom with hot water, a ceiling fan and screened windows nicely integrated in the gardens at the edge of the rainforest. Every room has a private sitting area with relaxing rocking chairs with nice garden views from where many birds can be seen.  

The main building houses the reception, bar, lounge, a small souvenir shop, a natural history library and a good restaurant. The lodge was build using local materials with an impressive roof made out of 60 000 palm-leaves. The restaurant serves healthy Costa Rican dishes using fresh local ingredients. There is also a refreshing natural pool that is filled with the water of a nearby forest stream and there is a network of trails going through rainforest and colorful tropical gardens.

Birding and wildlife attractions

According to Ebird 406 species of birds have been recorded in Esquinas Rainforest Lodge. The proximity of various habitats ranging from rainforest, gardens, forest edge, pasturelands, palm- and rice plantations makes birding in and around Esquinas Rainforest Lodge very rewarding. You can expect to see some species that are hard to see anywhere else like Brown-throated Parakeet, Red-rumped Woodpecker, Blue-headed Parrot, and some of the many South Pacific endemic species like Spot-crowned Euphonia, Fiery-billed Aracari, Orange-collared Manakin and many more. On a good day in Esquinas Rainforest Lodge one could get more than 100 species of birds.  Besides that Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is a great place for herping with a good chance of seeing various species of interesting frogs, snakes, anoles, and many more…

Target bird species

  • Black-cheeked Ant-tanager: this large tanager has a very small distribution range limited to the Osa Peninsula and neighboring Golfe Dulce area. In Esquinas Rainforest Lodge it can be seen on the forest trails, often following mixed species flocks.
  • Fiery-billed Aracari: this beautiful toucan species is restricted to Southern Costa Rica and Western Panama and can often be seen in the garden and forest edge 
  • Admirable Hummingbird: the male of this  beautiful hummingbird has a striking purple throat that flashes up  when hit by the sunlight. They can often be seen feeding on the Potterweed in the hotel garden.
