Birding and wildlife attractions

According to Ebird 509 species of birds have been reported on the 350 ha Arenal Observatory Lodge property. Its unique position at middle elevation on the Caribbean slope, with access to extensive rainforest and with the nearby continental divide generates a exceptional mix of species. The very active feeders in front of the restaurant offers easy birding and photography with some great species like Montezuma Oropendola, Crested Guan, Great Currasow and Emerald Tanager. Besides that there is very good rainforest birding to look for more cryptical forest species like Antbirds, Woodcreepers, Wrens, Euphonias,…

Target birds

  • Emerald Tanager: beautiful brdightly colored Tanager that often shows up at the feeders .
  • Great Currasow: large bizarre turkey-like bird is very easy at Arenal Observatory Lodge. Early morning they can be expected around the fruit feeders and relatively common around the hotel gardens as well.
  • Black-crested Coquette: this is one of the smallest but also most attractive hummingbirds of Costa Rica. Often seen feeding on the purple flowers of the potterweed in the garden.
  • Bare-necked Umbrellabird: this rare cotinga species is hard to see. You will definitely need some luck in order to observe them…often they hang out at the edge of the rainforest.
  • Yellow-eared Toucanet: another difficult bird to see and the hardest of all Costa Rica toucans. They normally are strictly forest-related and can be found around big fruiting trees inside of the rainforest.
