It is a favorite place for people wanting to get to know and photograph the birds of the highlands including the Resplendent Quetzal. Quetzal Paradise Lodge is located in the heart of the endemic rich Talamanca mountain chain at only 2 hours driving from San José connected by good paved roads.

Facilities

Quetzal Paradise Lodge offers 10 standard rooms and 4 Superior rooms. All rooms have recently been updated and have private bathroom, coffee maker and electrical heater (it gets cold at night). Superior rooms are larger with big windows offering spectacular panoramic mountain views and are located a bit farther away from reception and restaurant area but have a nearby parking lot.

Target bird species

  • Resplendent Quetzal: Resplendent Quetzal is the iconic bird of the Costa Rica cloud forest and Quetzal Paradise Lodge is the perfect place to see and photograph it. The lodge has a network of contacts with local farmers monitoring the quetzal’s whereabouts. Every day the lodge gets the most up to date information form these farmers so the local guides and clients are able to find the quetzal very fast. In return the farmers get paid for every tourist that visit their land.
  • Fiery-throated Hummingbird: this is  endemic to the Costa Rica – Panama highlands. It is very common and easy to photograph at the feeders in front of the restaurant
  • Black-and-yellow Silky Flycatcher: this attractive black-and-yellow bird is  common moving around with other species in mixed species flocks in the cloudforest around the lodge.
  • Wrenthrush: The Wrenthrush could be compared to an Antpitta in shape and behavior since it tends to be very secretive hiding in the dense foliage.
