Natural Lodge Caño Negro

Introduction

Natural Lodge Caño Negro offers a fantastic birding experience in the authentic Caño Negro community. It is the ideal base for the nearby Caño Negro wetland, Medio Queso wetland and Rio Frio river: great habitats that many birders and photographers will enjoy a lot. Natural Lodge is located in the Caño Negro town in North Costa Rica close to the Nicaraguan border. It is a 4 – 4,5 hour drive from San José along paved road, except for the last 20 kms, which are unpaved but in good condition.

Facilities

Natural Lodge Caño Negro offers 42 pleasant rooms with private bathroom, air conditioning and a balcony with relaxing chairs set in beautiful gardens full of birds and butterflies. There is a decent restaurant serving local and international dishes a la carte and a well stocked bar. Their swimming pool has been renovated recently.

Birding and wildlife attractions

351 species of birds have been reported in Natural Lodge and 476 in the nearby Caño Negro wetland Reserve. The mix of precious habitat with many wetland area, riverbanks, pasturelands, plantations and some good pieces of primary and secondary rainforest result in this high avian diversity. Expect a mix of aquatic birds and Caribbean lowland rainforest birds. Caño Negro is probably the best place in Costa Rica to observe and photograph Kingfishers. All 6 species of neotropical Kingfisher species can be seen here.

Target bird species

  • Jabirú: the large Jabirú Stork is a very rare sight in Central America. Caño Negro has some of the last breeding couples of Jabiru. The best time of the year ro see this bird is in the driest period between March and April or later in September – October, when the water is more limited and the waterbirds more concentrated.
  • Green-and-rufous Kingfisher: by far the hardest of all 6 neotropical Kingfisher species and also a very pretty one. This species can sometimes be seen and photographed on the Rio Frio River.
  • Yellow-breasted Crake: this tiny attractive crake is easily overlooked and very hard to see. They can sometimes be seen walking on the water vegetation looking for small invertebrates.
  • Agami Heron: the Rio Frio River is one of the best spots in Costa Rica for the very secretive and rare Agami Heron.
