Target bird species

  • Scaled Antpitta: this is one of the most secretive and hard birds to see in Costa Rica. The staff at Hotel Quelitales has succeeded in the last years to train a couple of these birds to come out of the thick vegetation by offering them earthworms at their birdhide.
  • Hummingbirds: naming one single particular target hummingbird in the gardens of Hotel Quelitales would do the place injustice. In one morning one could expect up to 10 different species including some species that are very hard to see elsewhere like Black-bellied Hummingbird, the endemic Coppery-headed Emerald, the peculiar Green-fronted Lancebill and rare White-bellied Mountain-gem.
  • Cabani’s Ground Sparrow: this is one of the mainland endemic bird species of Costa Rica.. Cabani’s Ground Sparrow won’t be seen on the grounds of Hotel Quelitales, but can be found in one the coffee plantations of Cachi at 10 minutes driving from the hotel. A local guide can be hired to help you search for this bird.
