Hotel Gemas del Bosque

Introduction

Hotel Gemas del Bosque is a small hotel run by the local Granados family. It is beautifully located in a secluded place in the heart of the Talamanca mountains surrounded by lush cloud forest and great mountain views. Hotel Gemas del Bosque is a great base from where to explore the unique avifauna of the Costa Rica highlands and especially for observation and photography of Resplendent Quetzal. Hotel Gemas del Bosque is located at only 2 hours from San José conected by good paved roads; only the last 2 kilometers are unpaved but in good shape.

Facilities

Hotel Gemas del Bosque offers 10 cozy individual bungalows all with great mountain views. All bunaglows come with either a king size bed or two twin beds, have a private bathroom with warm water and a heater. There is a good restaurant serving great meals using fresh local products. besides that Hotel gemas del Bosque has walking trails and offers fruit and sugar feeders offering great bird photography opportunities. Local guides specialize in birding and bird photography.   

Birding and wildlife attractions

according to Ebird 95 species of birds have been recorded from Hotel gemas del Bosque. But in the larger San Gerardo de Dota area 217 species of birds haven been registered. Hotel Gemas del Bosque offers great birding with the typical species of the Talamanca highlands of which many are endemic to Costa Rica and West-Panama. Examples are Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher, Collared Redstart, Yellow-winged Vireo, Large-footed Finch, Ruddy Treerunner, Flame-throated Warbler,…Hotel Gemas del Bosque gives a lot of attention to bid photographers; with great setups for photography of the secretive Spotted Woodquail, several species of hummingbirds and of course for Resplendent Quetzal. One of the owners and local guides of Hotel gemas del Bosque is Eric Granados, famous for his exellent Resplendent Quetzal photography

Target bird species

  • Spotted Woodquail: this is very attractive ground dwelling bird often foraging on the forest floor with groups of 4 to 10 individuals. Spotted Woodquails are common at the Hotel Gemas del Bosque feeders
  • Resplendent Quetzal: you cannot miss this spectacular bird. Hotel Gemas del Bosque monitors closely the whereabouts of Resplendent Quetzal so you have a very good chance of finding one in the area.
  • White-throated Mountain-gem: this attractive hummingbird restricted to Costa Rica and Western-Panama highlands can be seen regularly at the feeders
