Cerro Lodge

Introduction

Cerro Lodge is a good base from where to explore the avirich Central Pacific Coast and beautiful area around Parque Nacional Carara and the Tarcoles River. From the moment you step out of your door in Cerro Lodge you will be in overwhelming bird habitat with birds and butterflies around you. Cerro Lodge is conviently located at only 1,5 hour drive from San José along alomst 100 % good paved roads.

Facilities

Cerro Lodge has 8 standard rooms, and 14 superior rooms spread out over a nice green area at the edge of the rainforest and surrounded by beautiful and bird rich gardens. All rooms have air-conditioning and private bathrooms with hot water. superior rooms are more spacious with also larger bathroom. There is an open air restaurant overlooking the mangrove sin front of the Pacific Ocean from where the birding is very good. The restaurant serves a wide variety of local and international dishes and specializes in pizzas. There is also a small swimming pool.

Birding and wildlife attractions

According to E-bird 378 species of birds have been registered on the Cerro Lodge property. The lodges ground offers easy birding from the restaurant where several species frequent the feeders with Rufous-naped Wrens, Hoffman’s Woodpeckersand Streak-backed Orioles. Also large groups of White-throated Capuchin Monkeys come often to the feeders, depleating the bannanas very fast… Cinnamon Hummingbird can be seen regularry hovering nearby on the potterweed and heliconia flowers. Also the Cerro Lodge access road offers good birding with some interesting tropical dry forest species like Ferruginous Pygmy Owl and Black-headed Trogon. Besides that Cerro Lodge is only at 30 minutes driving from Parque Nacional Carara and the Tarcoles River for much more interesting species.   

Target bird species

  • Scarlet Macaw: Scarlet Macaws are easy to see from Cerro Lodge. They often fly over in pairs or small groups in the early morning and later afternoon.
  • Yellow-naped Amazon: this large parrot is critically endangered but can still be frequently seen from cerro lodge feeding in nearby fruit trees or flying overhead.
  • Common Potoo: there is often a Common Potoo along the access road of Cerro Lodge. Looking for them at night when they become active and vocalize is your best chance to look for them.
