Rancho Naturalista

Introduction

Rancho Naturalista is one of the most famous Costa Rica birding lodges. Very active fruit and sugar feeders, a good trail system going to various types of habitat, great nearby local birding sites and the availability of skilled specialized birding guides makes Rancho Naturalista an ideal base for bird watching in Costa Rica. Rancho Naturalista is located about 65 km east of San José, a pleasant 2 to 2,5 hour drive along paved roads through some rural parts of the country passing by coffee and sugarcane plantations. The lodge is conveniently located around 900 masl, the perfect altitude to escape from the tropical heat of the lowlands.

Facilities

Rancho Naturalista is a small lodge family owned and operated, mostly catering to birdwatchers, naturalists and photographers and offers 15 comfortable rooms. 4 are located in the main building and have direct access to the famous birding balcony. There are 11 private casitas with their own veranda with mountain and garden views. The main building is made in traditional colonial style and includes a comfortable sitting area with free wireless WIFI and a cozy indoor and outdoor dining area. Delicious meals are prepared in a creative way using fresh local ingredients.

Birding and wildlife attractions

Rancho Naturalista has 520 species of birds recorded on its grounds. Birding at Rancho Naturalista can be very productive with easy birding from their famous birding balcony with view on the feeders and surrounding rainforest and more challenging birding on their forest trails. A morning bird session could easily produce up to 50 – 60 species. When planned well and with the additional help of their skilled local bird guides it is possible to see more than 100 species from Rancho Naturalista. Also bird photographers will enjoy the wide variety of colorful birds that area easily accessible at the feeders; with White-necked Jacobins and Green-breasted Mangos at the sugar feeders and several species of colorful Tanagers at the fruit feeders. Besides that a moth trap not only attracts beautiful moth species but also serves as a buffet the next morning for many species of more secretive rainforest birds like Spotted Woodcreeper, White-breasted Wood-wren and many others…

Target species

  • Snowcap: The Snowcap is a very atypical and unique hummingbird. It is a bird hard to see and Rancho Naturalista is one of the most reliable places for Snowcap in Costa Rica. Snowcap will not come to any feeders but is often seen at the purple flowers of the Potterweed.
  • White-crowned Manakin: White-crowned Manakin is not easily seen in Costa Rica. The nearby lek, where courting males are concentrated is probably the best place in Costa Rica to see this rare Manakin.
  • Lovely Cotinga: Lovely Cotinga is an extremely hard species to find in Costa Rica, despite the male’s bright blue coloration.  Lovely Cotinga has been seen on various occasions  perched in nearby perches from Rancho Rancho Naturalista.
