Aratinga Tours is run by Pieter Westra, a
Belgian biologist living in Costa Rica. Pieter is a nature lover and specializes
in birdwatching. He enjoys sharing his passion and knowledge about Costa
Rica's biodiversity and therefore would like to invite everybody to take a

Costa
Rica:
a birdwatching paradise
Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world where in
such a small area exist such a large concntration of
birdspecies. With more than 870
 avian
species Costa Rica is home to about 10 % of all birds
known worldwide, eventhough its area of 51 000 km2
is only 0.01 % of the total area of the world !
The main reasons for this
area Costa Rica's enormous diversity in habitats and its
unique position as a landbridge between North-America and
South-America. Therefore many Central American species reach
their southern most limit and some South American
species reach their northernmost limit in Costa Rica. Costa
Rica (together with West-Panama) is one of the world's
largest centers of endemism with almost 70 species nowhere
else to be found ! Besides
well-known cosmopolitan families like Thrushes, Cuckoos,
Owls, Herons,...Costa Rica's avifauna also contains many
neotropical families,
like Toucans, Hummingbirds, Jacamars, Cotinga's, Motmots,...
Especially these colourfull birds make birdwatching very
spectacular in Costa Rica.
